8 Tricks to Kick Your Cold in the Butt.

Unfortunately I’ve been reminded that it’s that time of the year – cold season.

With my roommates all having been sick at least once this year by now, I was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen. Now that I’ve been greeted with a cold I’ve been spending the day doing some of my best tricks to get better, and thought that as a public service (being the generous and caring person I am) I should share them with you! So here we go, 8 things to make your cold sizzle away.

Don’t Just Rest, Sleep!

This is probably one of the most important and obvious tips, but also can be one of the hardest. I’m a serial relaxer and Youtube binge watcher when I’m sick, especially on the weekends because I don’t want to “waste” my precious time to relax and enjoy myself. This will only backfire in the end though. So, as much as Hulu and Netflix are calling your name try to resist and sleep the cold away

Stay Hydrated – skip the Gatorade and Try Adding Lemon or Other Fruit to Your Water

When I was a kid and sick I’d always be handed Gatorade and water to help me stay hydrated. This isn’t necessarily a bad combo, but I do notice that having too much sugar while I’m sick can make me feel queasy or shaky. Instead, add some fruit or lemon to your water for an extra punch of vitamins, and an added flavor that will keep you drinking more.

Buy Cold Pressed Juice

Don’t stop at buying it, you’ll also need to drink it! Cold pressed juices are a great way of getting extra vitamins into your system and helping your immune system fight its best fight. I would recommend a green pressed juice, or whatever one fits what you think your diet has been lacking.

Tea, Tea, Tea!

The best tea for when you sick, not to get better, but to survive your sickness is throat comfort tea. It’s doesn’t give you the weird tingly sensation over the counter sprays do, but alleviates the discomfort and in my opinion taste much better. Don’t forget, with tea you can always add honey or agave nectar to help sweeten it up. I also enjoy ginger teas and antioxidant teas when I’m feeling under the weather.

If you have the choice to stay home, do it.

Most of the time if you bite a cold in the butt before it gets bad it will save you sick days in the future. The harder you work your body when you are sick the more likely your cold will escalate in to something else.

Eat your Fruits and Veggies, and then more!

Even if you’ve lost your appetite, when you’re sick it is not the time to skip out on nutrients. So pack all your meal with as much nutrient dense food as you can while still being able to get it down.

Chicken Noodle Soup

This is another classic, but it really does help! Something about the broth is a miracle worker when it comes to soothing your cold. If you’re vegetarian try to get a hardy vegetable soup, that isn’t canned and has kale and grains in it.

Drink Apple Cider Vinegar

This trick can help with sinus congestion, which is one of the worst parts of a cold. So, try taking a shot, or a watered down cup with each meal to gain some relief and enjoy the other health benefits like detox as well.
